Abstract

Port Jackson Press Australia is pleased to announce the release of a series of innovative new prints by Belinda Fox, Rona Green and Susan Pickering, the first in the 2005 publishing program. Rona Green and Susan Pickering spent several months working in collaboration with the team of printers at the Port Jackson Press studio resulting in an impressive and vibrant body of new published work, and experimentation with a diverse range of intaglio printmaking techniques.

Belinda Fox is a leading print practitioner who is nationally renowned for her large-scale experimental etchings and intricate mapping of personal journeys. combining western and eastern aesthetics. Fox was recently awarded the prestigious Silk Cut Award for Linocut Prints (2004) and her work is represented in major public and private collections. Her new works explore “ideas of presence and absence, hope and loss, ideal and reality that play out in our lives both individually and globally. In these works, shapes are cut out exposing holes that allude to what went before, while at other times positive shapes are added resulting in an obfuscation of meaning. Lotus flowers tower above – a symbol of renewal and hope, yet these are black and doubtful. They rise up with courage but question which direction they are heading”

Rona Green has collaborated with the team of printers at Port Jackson Press studio creating a series of intaglio prints, which reflect her interest in popular and sub culture and affection for animals. Rona Green’s witty and humorous works investigate the darker side of the psyche and the multifaceted personality of her pets. Green was awarded the Swan Hall Print Acquisitive Award in 2004, has exhibited widely and her prints are represented in major public and private collections throughout Australia.

Susan Pickering is a talented mid-career printmaker based in Hobart and is recognised nationally for her beautifully crafted and enigmatic images. She has created a series of evocative and mysterious etchings Light Dance I – III and Dancing Light I – II, reflecting her long-term preoccupation with the effects of light, shadow and surface. The genesis for the prints in this series was “the dancing, dappled light of the shadows of trees. As this light waxes and wanes, and as it falls on different surfaces, it projects a constantly shifting range of suggestive forms and textures. From this starting point the prints have evolved; swinging mood through the use of varying tonalities, contrasts, colours and degrees of disintegration of the initial idea” [PJP media]
