Abstract

Like most clothing, the kimono carries encoded messages indicating the status, taste and age of its wearer, as well as the context in which it is worn. Its evolution over more than a thousand years has reflected changes in Japan's social and political culture.

Drawing on the Gallery's collection of ukiyo-e prints, this exhibition explores aspects of the kimono during the Edo period (1600-1868). The Edo period was highly significant in the development of the kimono, witnessing technological advances and experimentation in textile design and weaving processes that enabled the production of sumptuously decorated clothing.
