Abstract

'Essentially Modern' presents a rich and varied picture of art-making in Australia in the early decades of the twentieth century.

It highlights the work of artists who challenged the academic tradition of landscape painting, adopting innovative techniques in order to capture the excitement of a rapidly changing world.

Printmakers such as Margaret Preston, Thea Proctor and Dorrit Black were united by their desire to promote a modern aesthetic, and to make their work available to a broad audience.

The images reveal aspects of modern life, and allow us to view this vital period through the eyes of those who sought to record it. [QAG media]
