Abstract

This exhibition, the first of Australian prints, since the Gallery opened in September 1982, shows the results of inaugural curator, Roger Butler, strategies for forming a comprehensive collection of Australian prints. It included a selection of colonial prints including William Blakes engraving of A family of New South Wales (1793), the ealy portraits of Biddy Salmander by William Baker and Tooban by Charles Rodius. Also featured were works by Jessie Traill, Alan Sumner, Margaret Preston and Richard Larter. The exhibition includes works by Australians of non English speaking background such as Nicholas Nedelkopoulos and prints by Aboriginal artists including Raymond Meeks, and England Bangala.
