Abstract

Adam Cullen’s often outrageous paintings belie a dedicated drawing and print-making practice that hearkens back to the Old Masters. The first exhibition of his works on paper, BETWEEN THE LINES: WORKS ON PAPER 1995–2005 celebrates Cullen’s prowess as a draughtsman—adept in ink, acrylic and watercolour, as well as collage and etching.
The exhibition provides a unique insight into the artist’s powerful repertory of symbols and motifs—dogs, dismembered kangaroos, Aussie blokes and headless women. Cullen skews mythic Australian imagery to speak of the ignorance, cynicism and violence of contemporary Australian society. [Gallery blurb]
