Abstract

From Paris with Love: The Graphic Arts in France 1880s–1950s presents an array of prints, posters, drawings and artists’ books drawn from the NGV’s own collection. The exhibition is particularly strong in prints, reflecting the remarkable boom in printmaking that occurred in France during this period, and especially in the 1890s. A number of themes explore why Paris was so inspirational and remains so loved. These include the historical and social development of Paris and the artistic stimulation provided by the city and the surrounding French countryside; the rise of interest in the artist’s print and poster and its supportive industry; the influence of Japanese art and intellectual movements such as the fin-de-siècle interest in spiritualism and the imagination; and the city’s continuing evolution as an artistic hub and centre of graphic production during the twentieth century.

From Paris with Love is on display in the Robert Raynor Gallery, the dedicated Prints and Drawings Gallery, on the ground floor of NGV.International. [NGV media]
