Abstract

Ukiyo-e (uki - floating, yo - world, e - pictures), literally, pictures of the floating world, was applied to the popular arts of painting, woodblock prints and illustrated books that depicted life in the great urban centres of Japan in the Tokugawa period (1615 – 1888).

This exhibition will present more than a hundred Japanese woodblock prints depicting subjects that include; beautiful women (Bijin-ga), actors of the Kabuki Theatre, landscapes and Samurai Warriors.   Also included in the exhibition will be the preparatory ink drawings, tools and examples explaining the different stages of the woodblock printing process.
