Abstract

‘33’ is a print exchange portfolio project curated by Melbourne based artist Rona Green. 33 artists from all over Australia were invited to create an edition of 33 prints for exchange amongst each other. The artists have also printed a set of 6 artist’s proofs of their prints and these will be exhibited at the Port Jackson Press Print Room, Fitzroy, Melbourne in September 2005.

‘33’ is the fifth folio project initiated by Green in recent years. Motivated by a love of print, she sees the projects as an opportunity to establish a network amongst printmakers and build a collection of contemporary works on paper. She finds the remarkable generosity of the artists who choose to take part in the folios inspiring. Exhibiting the folio prints is a way of celebrating and promoting the efforts of the artists, as well as the medium of printmaking.

Constructing the invitation list is a fairly random affair. Green seeks out interest from a mix of friends, colleagues and artists whose work she has admired from afar. Contact is made through acquaintance, email or artists galleries. The main aim with this folio was to make sure artists from every state in Australia were represented, and as always there is a mixture of emerging as well as established print practitioners.

Criteria for the folio was kept fairly simple: each artist was to work on paper sized 33 x 33 cm, using subject matter and the printmaking medium of their choice. The artists have utilised a diverse range of techniques including: digital, drypoint, embossing, etching, linocut, screenprint, stencil, wood block and wood engraving.
