Abstract

To complement the 2020 Adelaide Biennial, this exhibition provides an historical context by surveying the representation of monsters in European printmaking from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

The title of the exhibition derives from Francisco Goya’s famous engraving The sleep of reason produces monsters. Etchings from Goya’s Los Caprichos (The Caprices) and Los Disparates (The Follies) will be seen alongside works by Albrecht Dürer, Jacques Callot, William Blake, Odilon Redon, and engravings based on the drawings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
