Abstract

"The first public gallery exhibition of contemporary artist Gordon Bennett's print media is on display at the DELL Gallery @ QCA, Queensland College of Art Griffith University.

Out of Print: Gordon Bennett will include more than 120 framed works made between 1984 -2004 and will serve as a significant resource on the artist.

Dell Gallery @ QCA director Simon Wright said it would be the first time many of the works had been catalogued, exhibited or reproduced and the majority were on loan from the artist's studio.

Bennett, who graduated from Queensland College of Art Griffith University in 1988 and whose work has been exhibited in major public galleries around Australia and internationally, covers the whole spectrum of mediums in contemporary art.

While initially interested in several traditional printmaking techniques, such as lithography, etching, linocuts and woodblock printmaking, computer-generated imagery [CGI] is now the primary vehicle for Bennett's work in print media.

Mr Wright said the exhibition was a major coup for the gallery.

"It shows Gordon's working relationship with printed matter as one where, at various stages in his career, he has chosen to make works that inform, nourish and act as source imagery for his practices in painting, installation and performance," Mr Wright said.   "They also operate as stand-alone editioned works.

"The exhibition would appeal particularly to anyone interested in contemporary art, the artist's process and working methods, as well as those interested in print making," he said.   "Gordon Bennett is a major contemporary Australian artist, whose works include painting, print-media, video, performance, drawing, installation and more recently, sound, animation and music. It's a rare opportunity to see one whole facet of his work over a sustained period."

Compounding the nature of Bennett's practice are works in this realm by his alter ego, John Citizen, that take the domestic interior and home decor as subject matter..."[press release]
