Abstract

Collage (from the French word coller, to paste or glue) describes the act of gluing or attaching paper, fabric, natural objects and ephemera to create or enhance a work of art. In Europe and later the United States, Cubist, Dadaist, Surrealist and Pop artists explored collage as an art form free from historical baggage, which was accessible, democratic, and readily responsive to social and political concerns. Stick it! looks at how Australian artists have used this technique over the last seventy years, both as a final product, and as a step in their creative practice. It is the first exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria to focus on this art form and includes collages by Sidney Nolan, James Gleeson, Robert Klippel, Gareth Sansom, Elizabeth Gower, Katherine Hattam, Nick Mangan, Brook Andrew and many others.
