Abstract

Uncovering the stories behind an often overlooked form of design.

Vibrant, lively and engaging, the 13 posters in this exhibition from the archive of Watters Gallery, Sydney offer a unique perspective on 20th-century Australian art practice and on Australia in the 1970s and 80s.

Featuring iconic names in printmaking such as Redback, Earthworks and the Tin Sheds, the display includes not only posters of exhibitions and happenings at Watters but also posters for other events around the country, some produced by Watters artists. These are shown alongside related archival material to reveal the context and stories behind their creation.

Now held in the National Art Archive at the Art Gallery of NSW, these posters are more than just ephemera – they are art objects in their own right.
