Abstract

This exhibition explores the representation of King William IV and Queen Adelaide in portrait prints as well as by the popular press of the day. The nineteenth-century royal prints, which were commissioned for events such as the king’s coronation and the couple’s wedding, offer a fascinating insight into monarchical self-representation. They provide a contrast to the acerbic wit and unflattering treatment of the royal couple at the hands of contemporary satirists such as Robert Seymour and William Heath.{Exhibition media].
