Biography

Josette ORSTO
 
Josette Orsto whose Tiwi name is Papatayu, was born at Pularumpi, Melville Island, Northern Territory 30th October 1962. Josette watched her father Declan Apuatimi working at his crafts and was instructed by him in the arts of carving and painting. Artists, Marie McMahon and Susan Ostling assisted in a mural painting project part of a recent new womens art movement at Pularumpi. This stimulation has encouraged women like Josette to become versatile artists carving,  painting and working in the Batik programme.
