Biography
Rachel Roxburgh
Rachel Mary Roxburgh was born on 21 September 1915. The daughter of a bank manager, she trained as an artist at East Sydney Technical College before attending classes held by Adelaide Perry. During World War II she begrudgingly abandoned her artistic career to train as a nurse and worked in military hospitals. After the war she travelled to England and attended classes at the London Central School and the Hammersmith Art School, where she befriended the painter David Strachan and the designer Michael O'Connell. After her return to Australia she worked as a teacher of art and crafts.
Rachel Roxburgh was a founding member of the National Trust of Australia (NSW). In 1974 her Early Colonial Houses of New South Wales was published by Landsdowne Press. Its lively text is illustrated with her measured drawings. Rachel Roxburgh died at Moss Vale, NSW on 13 April 1991
