Biography
F.W. Niven (1831-1905) established his lithographic business in Ballarat in 1865 after purchasing the Ballarat Engraving and Lithographic Printing Office from Herman Deutsch. In 1883 it became F.W. Niven & Co. when he went into partnership with an employee Hams Irvine (1856-1922). This partnership ended in April 1888 after which his son Henry Niven (1862-1925) became a partner. In 1892 a Melbourne office was established and the firm relocated in to Melbourne in 1901, the Ballarat assets being sold to employees and renamed the Ballarat Lithographic and Printing Company. After the death of F.W. Niven in 1905 the company passed through various family and other hands before closing in 1983.
