Charles BANNON

Biography

Charles Bannon established the Paddington Print Studio, Sydney in 1967. The workshop’s screenprinting facilities and Bannon’s technical expertise were made available to artists at no cost, with the studio receiving a percentage of the print sales. Before its demise in 1971 the studio had made a significant contribution, having printed work by Eric Smith, Rodney Milgate, Kevin Connor, Charles Blackman, Cedric Flower, Pro Hart and Francis Lymburner. Bannon promoted the works as serigraphs in an attempt to differentiate the prints from commercial reproductions, and to further educate the public photographic displays were mounted to show how a screenprint was produced. Bannon believed that art should be available to all and he marketed the prints vigorously in Australia and overseas. Three editions were sold through the World Record Club and Eric Smith’s portrait His Holiness Pope Paul VI, produced to coincide with the papal visit to Australia in 1970, was produced in an edition of 5000. The workshop closed in 1971 and relocated to Adelaide. [Roger Butler, Printed images by Australian artists 1942-2020, Canberra: NGA, 2021]
