Biography

SAW South Australian Workshop (SAW) - Artist Cooperative Members List.

Initial Workshop space at 7 Rutland Place, Adelaide SA - Starting July 1978

Most of the first members were ex-graduate students direct from the SA School of Art

(Sculpture Dept) who completed their studies in 1977. The idea formed from the

need to have a workspace for mostly sculpture graduates so they could make a

better transition from Art School life to life as a practicing artist. The membership

quickly became open to any artist who found the work space suitable for their

practice.

Several of the inaugural members left SAW in the first year as their career ambitions

and circumstances post graduation changed.

In the first year the inaugural members who paid $50 each seed money up front to

get the Co-operative underway and then paid the monthly rent which was $10 per

week each plus any excess electricity / water / phone charges. Later on a $50 joining

fee was payable to cover all the 'improvements' others made to the Workshop.

SAW Received an initial $5000 grant from the Visual Arts Crafts Board of the

Australia Council in 1979 and $3000 from SA Dept. for the Arts for some workshop

equipment in 1980. Member went to Gibb and Miller Engineering closing down

auction at Port Adelaide and purchased Benches - Table Saw - Storage Cupboards

Chairs and Desks.

Rob Knottenbelt a hot glass artist required a larger outdoor space for his hot work

and kilns. SAW rented the rear adjoining semi derelict cottage at 17 Lowe Street

from the Adelaide City Council for $40 per month and a door was knocked out of the

rear wall of the Rutland Place building to access the outdoor area and construct a

shelter and hot glass kilns. SAW members eventually turned the cottage into extra

workspace with a sound room covered in egg cartons and a front room Gallery.

Inaugural membership were involved in setting up the Workshop - 1978 - Artist

Cooperative Membership rules and Constitution. Several ex-factory/storage spaces

were looked at around Mile End and Thebarton but the first SAW rented property

was 7 Rutland Place in Adelaide.

SAW 7 Rutland Place from 1978 to 1994 rented from a really nice bloke called Tony

Kaitatzis who worked as a cook at Pauls Fish Cafe in Gouger Street.

SAW moved from 7 Rutland Place to Unit 5/1 Ridley Street, Ridleyton SA - 1992?

SAW moved from Unit 5/1 Ridley Street, Ridleyton SA to 96 St Vincent Street Port
