Biography

Ellis Silas was born 1883 in London, England, and studied with his father designing interiors and textiles before studies in the studio of Walter Sickert. He travelled to Australia in 1907, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in the first world war, fought at Anzac Cove becoming an official war artist. Before returning to England in 1925, he travelled to Papua New Guinea, writing and illustrating <i>A primitive arcadia: being the impressions of an artist in Papua New Guinea<i>, published England, 1926. Silas continued to paint and produce posters. He died in England in 1972.
