Biography

Thomas de Kessler

Thomas de Kessler was born in Hungary in 1925 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. After the Second World War, he travelled to Australia as a ‘displaced person’, arriving in Melbourne in 1950. In the early 1950s he studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Melbourne University. Since then he has frequently exhibited paintings, prints, drawings and illustrations. His work often refers to ‘the lost generation’, those who suffered or were killed during the war. Other works draw their inspiration from Hungarian folk tales and use traditional motifs.
