Biography
Charles Conder
Born in England in 1868, Charles Conder travelled to Sydney to work as an apprentice surveyor in 1884. Shortly afterwards he met Tom Roberts and in 1888 he moved to Melbourne where he painted landscapes with artists Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin. In 1890 Conder returned to Europe and studied at Cormon’s studio in Paris before settling in London. During 1898 he produced wood-engraved illustrations for Balzac’s, La fille auz yeux d'or, published by Smithers. He was introduced to lithography by his friend William Rothenstein in 1898, producing in all thirty-seven examples in the medium. There are also four etchings. Charles Conder died 9 April 1909.
