Biography

The lithographer John Sands (1818-73) was an English immigrant who arrived in Sydney in 1837, bringing stock with him, he set up a business as a stationery supplier. The "Hourglass" became the registered trademark in 1865 and he is credited with publishing the first Christmas cards in Australia.
