THE Litho.Artists’ and Engravers’ Club held their usual monthly smoke night on Friday evening, January 16, at the Cathedral Hotel. Mr Ludwig Lang presided over the gathering, and Herr Lewertoff did excellent service at the piano. Mt Leon Driver, a persevering young musician, gave Liszt’s transcription of La Trovatore for the piano, and Mr J. Bernard Dewey later on rendered a pretty waltz on the same instrument. The singing of “Mary of Argyle” by Mr George M. Dowell proved him to be a promising tenor, and Mr F.A. Fiits gave “The Longshoreman” in graphic style. Messrs C. Jackson, J. Welby and R. Harvie each contributed vocal solos, and Mr Arthur Stach two recitations – Once More Unto the Breach” and “Henry V. before Harfleur” – both of which were received with hearty applause. A third selection from the same historical play – St Crispin’s Day was given with fine dramatic spirit by Mr Herbert Woodhouse. Mr Lang gave a humorous recitation, and the evening closed with the “National Anthem”.
