Abstract

This thesis explores issues of access and equity encountered by contemporary women printmakers practising in regional Australia. It represents the largest in-depth study of contemporary printmaking practice by women in Australia to date, and also contains the first large-scale review of cultural development policies affecting regional artists and communities, particularly focusing on the period 1993–2003. The thesis contains multiple case studies of individuals and cultural institutions obtained through interviews with over three hundred artists, curators, art dealers and academics in all states and territories of Australia. The thesis is also informed by extensive databases of printmaking collections, exhibitions, grants, prizes and workshops. The data gathered was studied within sociological and art historical theoretical frameworks, with an awareness of how broader trends in arts management, cultural policy and cultural networks in the Asia Pacific region impact of both the production of art in regional Australia and the validity of established methodologies of cultural critique.
