Conrad Martens

Conrad Martens was born in England and studied with the landscape artist Copley Fielding. He became skilled in watercolour painting, particularly the rendering of atmospheric effects. He was the artist on the survey voyage of the Beagle, Charles Darwin being a shipmate.

On his arrival in Sydney in 1835, he became a successful landscape painter specializing in picturesque views of the harbour and the stately homes of Sydney society. He also travelled outside the immediate Sydney area producing paintings and sketches, some of which later became paintings while others were engraved for the popular press. A competent lithographer, he produced some works in Sydney. He also experimented with etching.

Martens died in Sydney in 1878.
