Malay mother.

As with the two other Asian triptych prints [cat.76.77], Griffin has incorporated a range of tonal variations in Malay mother. The featureless background and restricted colours of the woman's clothing contrast with the solid tones used for the flesh, rather than the hatching method used in other figurative prints. This combination creates a visually interesting but still beautifully simple work. The delicacy with which the facial features and hands have been defined and the real characterisation of the child grasping the mother’s fingers make this one of Griffin’s most sympathetic prints. See catalogue entry for Blue sarong [cat.76].
