Joy Ewart (Joyce Vera Mary)
Born in Murrumburrah, NSW in 1916, Joy Ewart studied at the East Sydney Technical College, 1936 and then with Dattilo Rubbo and Desiderius Orban. From 1949 to 1952, she studied in England and in Europe. In 1959 she studied in the USA on a Fulbright Scholarship.
In addition to being well-known for her painting and graphic work, Ewart became an influential art teacher in Newcastle and in Sydney. She opened her own art school in Sydney in 1960 and then soon afterwards started the Workshop Arts Centre at Willoughby, NSW, where printmaking was emphasised. She died in 1964.
