Abstract

Young Australian artists show their cultural ID cards

Doing (multi) culture - an installation showing video clips presenting western Sydney‚s diverse youth cultures - will be on display at the University of Technology, Sydney Gallery from 29 October to 11 November.

Conceived by Zen Yipu, a Sydney-based artist and academic Doing (multi) culture is part of the larger Generate: The Art of Migration festival, featuring a series of combined cultural events at UTS Gallery, the Powerhouse Museum and the ABC Eugene Gossens Hall.

Using 15 ibooks to simultaneously show video clips shot by 30 young artists from the University of Western Sydney, Yipu has created a cacophony of sound and image - a microcosm of Sydney‚s western suburbs.

Asking the artists to insert their personal stories into the pre-existing rhetoric surrounding Sydney‚s ethnic communities, Yipu says his installation "tries to challenge perceptions of ‚multicultural Sydney‚ and the idea of its loaded geographic identity". Doing (multi) culture has evolved into an intense, frank and very emotional cultural map of western Sydney.

According to UTS Curator Tania Creighton, "Doing (multi) culture enables students at UTS to engage with their counterparts at UWS", and linking up with our neighbours - the Powerhouse Museum and the ABC - is a fantastic opportunity for the gallery to reach new audiences and make connections that will enliven this part of the city".

The Generate: The Art of Migration Festival is the end product of a partnership between the NSW Government‚s Migration Heritage Centre and the Centre for Cultural Research at the University of Western Sydney. [gallery media]
