Abstract

Nicolas Goodwolf’s current body of work evolved after undertaking a residency in Sicily and Florence in 2005, funded by the Claudio Alcorso Foundation. During the residency, Goodwolf developed a series of powerful multi-plate etchings, which respond directly to the history, and landscape of Sicily.

As Karen Lunn, artist and Associate Lecturer in printmaking at The Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania notes of Goodwolf’s work:

“His initial explorations were inspired by the volcanic islands off the North Eastern coast of Sicily resulting in a series of red mountains. As time and research progressed, his intrigue for others who had travelled to Sicily in pursuit of knowledge before him led to the exquisite illustrations of the marine life in the bay of Messina produced by the German biologist-philosopher Ernst Haeckel in the 19th century. After these initial explorations, Goodwolf found Sicily provided a fruitful context in which to further develop an art practice that is driven by his own experience of migration and of building a new life on new soil. Situated between mainland Italy, Africa and Europe, Sicily has been shaped through migration and a myriad of cultures throughout its history. “

As part of this residency, Nic was able to spend time in the print workshops of Il Bisonte, Florence and James Cox at Piazza Santo Spirito, where he was able to explore environmentally friendly printmaking techniques.

Goodwolf has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. His works are represented in major public and private collections both in Australia and overseas. [PJP media]
