Biography
Shigeo Shiga was born in Tokyo, in 1928. He studied pottery in 1947 under Saburo Saito at Niigata University, in 1953 at the Kyoto Craft Institute, in 1954 under Kenichi Tomimoto, Kunio Uchida, and Kiyoshi Nakajima in Kyoto, before building his own kiln at Yamashina, Kyoto in 1957. From 1961 to 1965 Shiga lectured in ceramics at Kyoto Professional Institute and the Osaka Craft Institute.
In 1966 Shiga arrived in Australia at the invitation of Winifred West and Les Blakebrough to work at the Sturt Pottery Workshops, Mittagong, NSW. He moved to Sydney in 1968 to work at the Talofa Workshop with Bernard Sahm, and in 1972 built his own kiln at Terrey Hills, NSW. From 1968 to 1973 Shiga lectured part-time in ceramics at East Sydney Technical College, at the University of New South Wales and at various summer schools throughout Australia.
In 1975 Shiga was awarded a gold medal at the 32nd Concorso Internazionale della Ceramica d'Arte Contemporanea, at Faenza, Italy. He has exhibited regularly both in Australia and Japan.
In 1980 Shiga returned to Japan.
